VOJVA
This collection was created within the confines of a closed space (isolation) due to the COVID 19 pandemic. The word “vojva” is an imperfect verb in the Macedonian language which means to hover around in a restless manner from one spot to the next which is something that all of us are currently doing within our own closed spaces at home. The collection contains silhouettes of the type “I”, “A”, “X”; however, at times it also deviates from the standard silhouette types. The predominant design principle is asymmetry with some symmetric instances present which as well is cohesively completed by means of the included color palette and textile map. The collection possesses a multitude of organic forms and geometric cuts with the intention of symbolizing the year 2020 in its entirety through the choice of materials. Additionally, the collection also contains pieces which are shaped as human lungs which are the organs exposed most to the dangers of the corona virus.
The color black in the collection is connected to strength, elegance, formality, death, evil and the mystery pertaining to the fear of the unknown. As such, this usually carries negative connotations (blacklist, black humor). Black as a color can also represent power and authority and at times can be interpreted to be very formal, elegant, and prestige in terms of aesthetics (black tie, black Mercedes). However, perhaps one of the most prominent symbols related to black is the emotion of sadness.
On the other hand, the color white reminds us of light, goodness and innocence. White is also considered to be the color of perfection. This color can represent security and purity. In contrary to the symbolism related to the color black, the color white bears positive connotations. However, at the same time it can be related to concepts such as sterility.
The color green is most directly linked to nature and as such it symbolizes growth, harmony, freshness and fertility. The color green has a strong emotional relationship to security. Dark green is oftentimes related to money. Finally, green as a color can suggest stability and resilience.
Each of these colors contain some type of symbolism related to increasing insanity and mixed emotions. The insertion of three different types of textures provides even more profound value to the collection. Therefore, even the very design of the textile itself stems from the experience of home isolation in terms of inspiration.
